What To Expect During A First Appointment
Chiropractic physicians will typically perform a battery of tests before proceeding with an adjustment of the spine. A standard first appointment may include:
A verbal interview This is done to ascertain the type of pain, discomfort or injury a patient is dealing with.
A physical examination The chiropractor may wish to see the patient’s current range of motion and physically examine the troublesome area or injury.
X-Rays These are also typically performed during a first appointment so a chiropractor can see if spinal misalignment is a concern. X-Rays can help a chiropractor determine the extent of an injury and see if adjustments might help assist in the healing and pain relief process.
About Adjustments
Many people fear going to a chiropractor will cause them more pain in an already tender area. The reality is an adjustment can cause some discomfort, but pain is not typically associated with a visit to a chiropractic professional.
During the actual adjustment, the chiropractor will have a patient lie down in a specific position that is deemed best for treating the area in question. For spinal adjustments, the person will generally lie face down on a special table. The chiropractor will then apply forced pressure to the affected area to point a joint back into place. Patients will generally hear a loud popping sound or a cracking sound and may feel instant discomfort that is followed by relief.
Following Up Adjustments
Adjustments are designed to help put the spine back into alignment, but they are not the only therapy a chiropractor will generally advise. In most cases, adjustments will be followed up with such treatments as:
Hot or cold compresses on the affected area
Stretching exercises
Massage, which may come before an actual adjustment
Electrical stimulation of the affected area
Strengthening exercises to help keep the spine properly aligned
Chiropractic appointments can cause some discomforts, but adjustments are not generally painful. Many people find this medical specialty provides them with the long-term relief they are after, especially if follow-up therapy is performed to strengthen muscles and increase range of motion.
